Description
* Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904). Set of five plates and one platter in tin-glazed earthenware with polychrome enamelled painted decoration from the series of beggars based on characters by Jacques Callot, including the beggar who has just received charity, the old woman with cats, the capitano of Baroni (2 plates in the model) ... Enamelled painted signature on reverse, circa 1880. Diameters: 24.5 cm and 30 cm. (One plate damaged and restored: Capitano de Baroni, small chips throughout) Jacques Callot, a famous painter from Nancy, lived through the Thirty Years' War. These painful episodes in the history of Lorraine are recounted in his Suite des Misères et les malheurs de la guerre (1633), published in Paris by the publisher and print merchant Israël Henriet, following the example of the Suite des Gueux ou les Bohémiens et les Mendiants published earlier in 1622. Bibliography: La Société des Amis de la Bibliothèque et du musée de Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, La Faïencerie de Raon-l'Etape, Éditions privées, 2010: model plates reproduced on p. 69 and 70. - A model of the plate with the beggar woman receiving charity is in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris. Inv. no. OAO1539 2.
