Description
* Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904). Pair of oblong vases with handles in polychrome enamelled earthenware with painted decoration of beggars in the style of Jacques Callot. Enamelled painted signature on reverse also bearing numbers 260 and 261, circa 1885. H. 21 cm. (Restoration to a socket and enamel) Jacques Callot, a famous painter from Nancy, lived through the Thirty Years' War. These painful episodes in the history of Lorraine are recounted in his Suite des Misères et les malheurs de la guerre (1633), published in Paris by the publisher and print merchant Israël Henriet, following the example of the Suite des Gueux ou les Bohémiens et les Mendiants published earlier in 1622. Here we have the representation of the "capitano de baron", an old man carrying a standard after the Gueux and the beggar woman who has just received charity (see lots 69 and 72). Bibliography: Tiny Esveld , Art signed Gallé, Edition privée, 2013: a pair of vases with halberdiers in the same spirit reproduced on p. 39.
