Description
* Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904). An earthenware pitcher on a heel with a painted polychrome enamelled decoration of a jovial drinker (champagne drinker) in a tavern in the style of a genre scene inspired by the Flemish and Dutch masters of the 17th century in the spirit of the drinkers of Jan Steen, David Teniers or Adriaen Brouwer. Enamelled handwritten signature on reverse, circa 1885. H. 15 cm. (Two small chips to the spout) Émile Gallé probably took over "The Champagne Drinker", a pastiche stained glass window made in 1874 by the glass painter Henri de Faucigny-Lucinge, great-grandson of Charles X; now kept in the Cité du Vitrail in Troyes (IM10016204 inv. Grand Est). Bibliography: Tiny Esveld , Art signed Gallé, Edition privée, 2013 : reproduced on model p. 50.
