Description
* Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904).
An earthenware circular platter with polychrome enamelled decoration of the profile of Lady Barkley (Elizabeth Dauncey) after Hans Holbein the Younger.
Handwritten signature on reverse, circa 1880.
Diameter: 28 cm.
(Minor restorations and small defects)
After his arrival in England in 1526, Holbein rubbed shoulders with the circle of Thomas More, a close friend of Erasmus and an important figure in English humanism. Holbein painted portraits of the scholar and his family, including a profile portrait of his daughter Elisabeth Dauncey, wrongly identified as the Lady Barkley at the time when Émile Gallé painted her portrait. This preparatory study, produced around 1526-1527, which inspired Gallé, is now in the Royal Collection Trust at Windsor Castle. The original painting was destroyed in a fire in 1752; only early copies remain.
