Description
* Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904). Red moon. Rare decorative circular tin-glazed earthenware bowl with ivory enamelled decoration enhanced with gold in the form of a zoomorphic quarter or crescent moon and an engraved fishing scene with a pierced rock by the sea. Moulded enamelled signature on reverse, circa 1875. D. 5.5 × 21 cm. Gengoult PROUVÉ (Victor PROUVÉ's father) created the optical illusion lunar model. This model was also used to create blown, moulded and wheel-engraved glass ashtrays known as clairs de lune. The Musée National des Arts et Métiers has an identical piece with an interior decoration of Pierrot et Colombine known as the red moon. The Musée d'Orsay has a study and a drawing of this model with a different decoration. Bibliography: Bernd AKENJOS, Émile Gallé, Éditions Gallé, 2012: similar model reproduced on p. 19.
