Description
* Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904). Cup in the shape of a pleated water lily leaf or dried tobacco leaf in trompe l'oeil. It is made of tin-glazed earthenware with a blue monochrome enamelled decoration of a lakeside landscape with a ruined castle painted in the style of Dutch landscapes. Enamelled painted signature on reverse, circa 1880. D. 20.5 × 37.5 cm. (Slightly broken enamel around the edges) An interesting piece that prefigures the free-form naturalism of the École de Nancy; the hills in the distance may evoke Japanese volcanoes.
