Description
* Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904). An archaic japanese vase in blue and brown glazed earthenware with a white flamed frieze on the shoulder. Recessed enamelled stamp on reverse, circa 1890. H. 23 cm. A rare earthenware vase by Gallé in the run-up to the Art Nouveau movement and research into enamelling using the Japanese flowing enamel technique and the influence of contemporary ceramists such as Théodore Deck, Carriès and Dalpayrat. An identical example is preserved in the Matsue Kitahori Museum (Japan) under the title "Vase bleu à large col, inv. n° 52, dated 1889". Through the almost architectural simplicity of its form and the importance given to the effects of material and enamel, this work illustrates Gallé's decorative research at the end of the 1880s, at the time of the Paris Universal Exhibition.
