Description
* Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904). Pitcher with zoomorphic pouring spout in tin-glazed earthenware with polychrome enamelled floral decoration on an embossed or honeycomb background with decorative basketwork, flowers and insects. Handwritten signature on the reverse, circa 1880. H. 35.5 cm A rare bird-shaped piece. It is one of several zoomorphic pieces in the Musée d'Orsay (see Sauterelle zoomorphic jug, notice 152890). Our vase seems to have been made earlier: it retains more of the shape and decoration inherited from Saint Clément. The head and handle, on the other hand, already foreshadow the organic Art Nouveau vision.
