Description
* Émile GALLÉ (1846-1904). Rare cigar box with two drawers hidden by a sliding front. It is in moulded varnished wood decorated on all sides with seashores and fishermen and stands on 4 round legs worked with a wood lathe. Engraved signature on the reverse, Nancy, circa 1900. D. 13.5 × 23 × 13 cm. (Slight warping and lifting, some scratches from use). The wood was engraved using the thermocautery technique (burnt wood or pyrography), using the wood's vein flaws to exploit them in the landscape. In this way, the grain of the wood becomes a poetic horizon. To our knowledge, this is one of the very few complete examples documented.
