Lot no. 9
[POST-INCUNABULA] [MARTIAL]
Venetiis, 1514. In-folio, (2) ff, 149 ff (marked CXLIX), woodcut title-frontispiece, figures, lettering and one plate. Early binding (17th?) full calf, spine ribbed, wide gilt lace framing the boards, these covered with a semi fleur-de-lys, gilt irons in the centre (Collegii Grassina). At the end: Impressum Venetiis, per Georgium de Rusconibus, Mediolanensem, anno Domino ["sic"] MDXIIII, die V decembris, inclito Leonardo, Lauredano Venetiarum duce, serenissimo, imperante.
Provenance: Library of Denis Godefroy (1615-1681), former historian, archivist and adviser to the King of France, with his armorial bookplate "argent à trois hures de sanglier de sable défendues de gueules" and bearing the inscription: "D. Godefroy".
A few defects to the binding, small ink stains scattered on the endpapers, a few handwritten lines on a blank sheet, rare marginal notes. Copy a little short of margin. Pagination error at the end of the volume, leaves 144-145 do not exist but the work is complete in 149 ff.
