NUMISMATICS Wednesday 26 November 2025 at 2pm A collection of silver coins from Vietnam (lots 85 to 132) Vietnam, after having been a Chinese province, became independent in 1428, under the name of Dai-Viet, then under the name of Dai Namin in 1802 under Emperor Gia Long. For a long time, the coins were similar to those of the Chinese, imitating the bronze Sapèques. A specific silver and gold coinage was introduced in 1802, continuing with the start of French colonisation in 1858 and then continuing with the imposition of the French protectorate in 1884, of a dual colonial (piaster and centimes) and Annamite monetary system, the latter disappearing with the end of the empire in 1945. These coins have been referenced by Albert Schroeder (1905, Sch), François Thierry and François Joyaux, as well as by Krause Editions (K.M.). This interesting series of 48 very fine coins, produced between 1945 and 1965, covers the period from Gia Long to Tu Duc, i.e. from 1802 to 1883.
