Henri-André Martin, 1981 Henri-André MARTIN (1918-2004) was a renowned doctor and a major figure in Lyon otology. He never stopped painting, making pictorial creation a means of expression at every stage of his life. The dispersal of his studio now reveals a dense, sensitive and singular body of work. This previously unpublished body of work, carefully selected in the intimacy of the artist's studio, bears witness to a coherent production structured by series, variations, repeats and transformations. It brings together paintings that oscillate between figurative research and more synthetic compositions, even verging on abstraction, highlighting an artistic approach that is constantly reflecting and evolving. The richness and diversity of his themes, at the heart of the questions raised by twentieth-century painting, offer a sensitive introduction to his work. His landscapes, vast beaches or the Provence countryside, magnified by springtime details of flowering branches, become spaces for meditation. The pictorial treatment of his nudes, where the brushstroke sometimes takes precedence over the subject, gives the viewer the ambivalence of the presence or effacement of the body. Close to the artists of the Lyon School (Jean-Albert Carlotti, André Cottavoz, Pierre Pelloux, Jacques Truphémus), as well as painters based in Provence around Eygalières (Mario Prassinos, Louis Pons, Joseph Alessandri) and the great Parisian elders (Jean Souverbie, Jean Piaubert) or the young post-war painters (Bernard Buffet), Henri-André Martin was also a committed collector and patron, part of a lively network of exchange and dialogue. This dimension enriches our understanding of his work, developed both in the seclusion and autonomy of his studio and through contact with others. Martin has received a number of important awards: Winner of the Prix Maurice Utrillo in 1964, he was also awarded the Medal of Honour by the Société lyonnaise des Beaux-Arts. A member of the Salon du Sud-Est, he also took part in the major Parisian salons (Salon d'Automne, Société nationale des Beaux-Arts, etc.) and was appointed correspondent of the Institut de France. His work, regularly exhibited in France, notably at the Galerie Malaval in Lyon, and abroad in Geneva, New York, Dallas and Caracas, has earned him both national and international recognition. This sale offers a rare immersion into the world of an artist for whom painting was a form of escape, another way of travelling the world and revealing his feelings.
