STUDIO COLLECTION: CLAUDE SAVARY – KNOWN AS CAMEL (1935–2021)
A self-taught artist, Claude Savary began developing his own personal exploration of pictorial space, geometry and material in the 1960s. Deeply influenced by experiments in kinetic art, particularly the ‘Light and Movement’ exhibition at the Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris in 1967, he quickly became interested in what goes beyond mere representation in painting.
As early as 1967, his initial explorations gave rise to ‘sensitised spaces’, abstract collages based on cutting, rhythm and the creation of tension on the surface.
From 1968 onwards, the ‘standing rectangles’ appeared, soon followed by the ‘painted squares’, which were to become the central motif of his work. For Savary, the square constituted a genuine space for exploration, gradually freed from the frame and conceived in relation to the surrounding space.
In the 1970s, this exploration extended into the third dimension through assemblages combining paint, wood, railway sleepers and metal elements salvaged from the Normandy coastline not far from his home in Agon-Coutainville.
From the 1980s onwards, he produced a major series of collages made from painted and cut-out newspaper pages, some of which required nearly 200 hours of work.
He continued this exploration into the 2010s, creating a dialogue between paper, brushstrokes, drips and textural effects.
His work, which has remained largely unknown, was the subject of just one solo exhibition, at the Château de Cerisy-la-Salle in 2015.
At the crossroads of collage, abstract painting and assemblage, Claude Savary’s work is distinguished by an original and coherent artistic approach, in which the square serves as the central theme.
This studio sale offers an opportunity to showcase a previously unseen, graphic body of work that has, until now, remained entirely unknown.
