Jean-Porcher’s studio online sale Lots are to be collected from ADJUG’ART Brest by appointment on 02 98 46 21 50 (ext. 3) or via [email protected] Items that have been sold but not collected by their buyers will be held free of charge for fourteen days. After this period, storage charges will be borne by the buyers at a rate of €5 (excl. VAT) per calendar day and per lot. Additional storage and transport costs may apply. BIBLIOGRAPHY: JEAN PORCHER (1927–2011): Born in Saint-James in the Manche department, Jean Porcher studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nantes from 1944 to 1948. Recognised for his talent at a very early age, he won the City of Nantes Prize and a scholarship to attend the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He remained there from 1948 to 1955, working in Souverbie’s studio and in the studio for monumental art linked to architecture. He met and became friends with Bernard Buffet, Jean Carzou, Syaed Haider Raza, Francis Newton Sousa and Janine Mongillat…He also frequented the studios of Fernand Léger and André Lhote. After graduating from the École des Beaux-Arts, he travelled throughout Europe and began working in film and theatre (at the TNP). He became friends with Agnès Varda, Jacques Demy and Bernard Evein. Galleries welcomed him for exhibitions, notably the Galerie de France, the Galerie Visconti, the Galerie Larue, the Galerie Drouant-David from 1954 to 1958 (during which time he gained a foothold in the British and American markets) and the Reid and Lefèvre Gallery in London. He received commissions from public bodies. In 1958, at Drouant-David, he exhibited as part of a group show alongside Bernard Buffet, Jean Cocteau, Foujita, Goerg, Van Dongen, Vlaminck and others… In the early 1960s, he decided to leave Paris and settled in the Loire-Atlantique region. He exhibited in Nantes at the Mignon-Massart and Moyon-Avner galleries, both in solo shows and in group exhibitions alongside local artists such as Davin, Dauzé, Lenormand and Bigot. Passionate about architecture, he decided to build his own house and turned his back on the galleries, creating only for himself, his close friends and family, a few collectors, and fulfilling public commissions. He gradually faded from the art scene and was largely forgotten. The rediscovery of his studio, near Nantes, has now brought his talent and influence to light. Jean Porcher was an independent artist perfectly in tune with his time; a lover of nature and light, he managed to retain an air of mystery and obscurity.
