On 21 June 2023, 120 magnums of the 2017 vintage Chablis Les Vénérables were loaded into the hold of the sailing yacht belonging to the doctor and explorer Jean-Louis Etienne, for a voyage of approximately 55,000 km between the North and South Poles.
This expedition welcomed on board a sailor with undeniable ties to Chablis: Damien Leclerc, Managing Director of La Chablisienne.
With his mind filled not only with magnificent memories of this journey, but also with the questions it raised, he decided to support the explorer’s project by selling these magnums in aid of his charity for the protection and exploration of the oceans and the poles.
Twenty lots of six magnums each – some accompanied by unique experiences at La Chablisienne’s various production and retail sites – are on offer in this charity auction, which AGUTTES is proud to organise.
The auction will be preceded by three days of exhibitions on 6, 7 and 8 October at our premises in Neuilly-sur-Seine.
On 8 October at 8.00 pm, the auction will take place in the presence of Jean-Louis Etienne himself, who will have the opportunity to recount in detail this voyage – a true human and scientific adventure – and Damien Leclerc, who will present La Chablisienne and tell us about the idea behind sending this wine on its journey.
As for the wine itself, having returned to dry land in Concarneau in March 2024, it has been ageing at the Chais de Chablis ever since.
The constant motion of the swell, a slight variation in temperature in the hold and a gradual change in atmospheric pressure throughout the voyage have allowed it to develop, imparting roundness, body and creaminess, whilst slightly accelerating its natural maturation, with a positive effect on its aromatic complexity. As the crew can attest, the wine has also travelled the world just as effortlessly as the Persévérance!
