AUCTION: DISCOVERIES BY SAINT FRANCIS SERRANO (1695–1748). A Dominican missionary of Spanish origin, he was ordained a priest in the Philippines and subsequently sent to China. Catholicism was banned there at the time, and persecutions began as early as 1729 during the reign of Yongzheng and continued until 1746 under Qianlong. The missions were extremely dangerous. Arrested along with four other Dominicans in 1746, he was imprisoned in Fuzhou and, following an unfair trial, sentenced to death by strangulation in 1748. Canonised by John Paul II on 1 October 2000, he is one of the ‘120 Martyrs of China’. FOLLOWING ESTATE SETTLEMENTS AND FAMILY DIVISIONS IN MARSEILLE AND PROVENCE.
