Petrarch, the author of the ‘Sonnets’, was one of the earliest collectors in history. Over more than 2,700 years of coin production, people have left their mark by scattering their coins and burying them, whilst others have taken it upon themselves to collect them.
Numismatics is constantly attracting new enthusiasts who are passionate about the study of coins and medals, and as Jean Babelon wrote, ‘coins tell the story of history’.
The collection on display brings together ancient coins: Greek, Roman and Byzantine.
Greek coinage is particularly varied, and its aesthetic appeal has never been equalled. These coins, renowned for their beauty, are struck in the image of ancient sculptures and depict mythological scenes, nymphs, animals… (stork, horse, owl, Pegasus, bull, lion, eagle, crab, dolphin…)
Roman coins reflect the economic and artistic history of the Republic and the Empire. They served as a means of propaganda and information.
Under the Roman Republic, the ‘gens’ – referring to a family group – mainly issued silver denarii, which formed the basis of the monetary system. Aurei were rare during this period.
Of particular note are a denarius depicting the Rape of the Sabine Women and an aureus from the gens Cornelia.
Under the Empire, coinage formed a veritable gallery of portraits on the obverse, whilst the reverses celebrated military victories, depicted deities and nymphs, and revealed monuments that have since disappeared.
Of particular note is a denarius of Emperor Postumus depicted ‘head to the left ’.
As for Byzantine coins, the majority of issues were in gold in the form of solidii. They played a crucial role in the economy across Europe and throughout the Mediterranean basin thanks to their stability over nearly seven centuries.
Among the Byzantine coins, those minted under Maurice Tiberius are particularly well-represented, most of them struck in Carthage at various mints. Three solidii dating from Heraclius’s revolt in 608 are the highlights of this collection. (see description above lot 88)
Having survived to the present day, coins are never silent; as La Bruyère wrote, ‘they are eloquent evidence of certain facts, fixed and indisputable monuments to ancient
history’.
