Online Auction – Art Deco
Geometric lines, precious materials, graphic elegance and the spirit of the Roaring Twenties: this auction celebrates the richness and modernity of the Art Deco movement.
Emerging as a continuation of the major decorative experiments of the early 20th century, Art Deco established itself in the 1920s as a new design language, favouring stylised forms, geometric compositions, refined materials and a resolutely modern aesthetic. This online sale presents an eclectic selection, bringing together glassware, crystal, ceramics, furniture, lighting, decorative objects and sculptures.
René Lalique’s glassware is one of the highlights of the selection. Several pieces bear witness to the artist’s creative genius, including the Saint Marc vase decorated with sparrows, the Fauvette ashtray, a moulded and pressed glass tray, as well as several vases and bottles in crystal and glass. Some pieces are accompanied by bibliographical references to Félix Marcilhac’s catalogue raisonné.
This selection of Lalique works is complemented by pieces by Pierre d’Avesn, characterised by powerful relief work and a geometric composition particularly representative of the Art Deco style, as well as various pieces in glass, crystal and ceramics that blend textural effects, stylised forms and decorative experimentation.
Tableware includes, notably, a solid silver tea and coffee service of English manufacture, with octagonal shapes and bevelled edges, as well as a set of animal-themed knife holders designed by Édouard-Marcel Sandoz for Gallia, demonstrating Art Deco’s fascination with the stylised representation of the animal kingdom.
The furniture, meanwhile, illustrates the evolution of interiors in the 1920s and 1930s: chairs, a leather club armchair, a set of seats, a bedside table and a large hall coat rack feature a combination of wood, veneer, metal, leather and geometric motifs. The structured lines, interplay of symmetry and decorative details emphasise this quest for an interior that is at once functional, elegant and sophisticated.
Art Deco sculpture takes centre stage, featuring several female figures, dancers, animals and compositions inspired by movement and sport. The selection notably includes works or designs associated with Alexandre Ouline, Alexandre-Joseph Derenne, Pierre Le Faguays, Paul Philippe, Demeter Chiparus and Joe Descomps, as well as a decorative marble and bronze clock depicting a young woman and a fawn.
Light fittings complete the collection, notably including a chrome-plated metal desk lamp, metal and brass wall lights in the style of Jacques Adnet, and various pieces combining glass, metal and geometric lines.
