Description
Franco PIZZI (1943).
A rectangular bronze plaque with a curved top and a brown patina, depicting in high relief the face of Christ with a halo, crowned with thorns, from which long plaited locks of hair fall on either side of the face down to the bottom of the composition. The expressive and stylised treatment of the face – with bulging eyes, pronounced features and a fine beard – as well as the radiant halo engraved in the background and the frame with its hammered geometric decoration, lend this work a strongly symbolist character, in the spirit of the renewed religious sculpture of the turn of the 20th century.
The inscription ‘ECCE HOMO’ (‘Behold the man’, the words of Pontius Pilate as he presented Christ crowned with thorns, John 19:5) appears at the bottom of the composition.
