Public Auction Wednesday 1 July 2026 – 1.30 pm Hôtel Drouot – Room 1 A LIFE IN HERITAGE – FABIENNE PASTOR’S PRIVATE COLLECTION. Memories of a Home - Collections and Personalities: “La Joncquière” from Monaco to Cuba, from Mexico to the Haut-Var in Provence. Fabienne Pastor spent many years travelling the world, notably in India, Cuba and Mexico. She immersed herself in the local culture and took an interest in the artists there; particularly in Cuba, where she met many figures in the contemporary art scene in the 2010s. To promote them, given the island’s difficult circumstances, she set up a gallery in Mexico: ‘La Luz’ in Mérida, where she promoted their work. La Jonquière, in the Var, served as the setting where she brought together all her collections; now a new chapter is beginning, and she has entrusted us with the task of selling her discoveries… Cuban art is, above all, a manifestation of the Cuban people’s resilience to live and express themselves despite the many vicissitudes of their history. It was in the 1940s that true recognition emerged; artists such as Wifredo Lam and Mariano Rodriguez trained and spread their art far beyond the island. In the arts, and particularly in painting, we find a fusion of African, Caribbean and Western influences. The themes explored are linked to Afro-Cuban culture; to social issues and spirituality, inspired by Santeria, a religion with Voodoo-like elements. Initially, the American market highlighted the island’s wealth of artistic talent in galleries and exhibitions (for example, with the 1944 MoMA exhibition ‘Modern Cuban Painters’). The Havana Biennial, which began in 1984, has helped to promote the country’s culture. Since the 2010s, we have seen the reputation and market value of certain artists rise significantly, particularly in Mexico, Florida, the rest of the United States and Europe. We are fortunate to bring together in this sale several leading artists of this period, who were collected and promoted by culture-loving collectors living in Cuba; all the paintings presented in this section were purchased directly from the artists whom they supported and exhibited in their gallery ‘La Luz’ in Mérida, Mexico: Rigoberto MENA, Juan Roberto DIAGO (known as DIAGO), Roberto VALENTIN (known as SUSSURRO), Ania TOLEDO, Alexis Leyva MACHADO (known as KCHO), Carlos QUINTANA, LOS CARPINTEROS, Marco Antonio Castillo VALDES, Dagoberto Rodríguez SANCHEZ, Alexandre Arrechea, Jesús ZAMBRANO, José Maria MIJARES FERNANDEZ, Douglas Argüelles CRUZ, Roberto FABELO, Jacqueline BRITO and Carlos GUZMAN.
