LOS CARPINTEROS ‘The Carpenters’ is an artists’ collective founded in 1992 in Havana, which places wood at the heart of its creative work. Originally formed by three Cubans who graduated in 1994 from the Higher Institute of Arts in Havana: Marco Antonio Castillo VALDES (born 1971), Dagoberto Rodríguez SANCHEZ (born 1969), and Alexandre Arrechea Jesús ZAMBRANO (born 1970), the collective began its work whilst they were still students; in 2003, it became the Valdés-Sánchez duo. Both live and work in Havana and Madrid, creating works in Europe and the United States. Their installations and performances, complemented by watercolour drawings and videos that defy the laws of nature (featuring tools as large as brick towers), question the functional aspect of architecture and design.
