Online Auction – Art Nouveau
Elegant forms, the poetry of nature and the craftsmanship of master glassmakers come together in this auction dedicated to Art Nouveau.
Through a selection of works of art, glassware, lighting, furniture, sculptures and decorative arts, this sale offers an immersion into the rich world of Art Nouveau, a movement which, at the turn of the 20th century, profoundly transformed the decorative arts.
Nancy glassware takes centre stage in this selection. Works by Établissements Émile Gallé, Daum Nancy, Muller Frères in Lunéville, André Delatte and Charles Vessière illustrate the richness of the experimentation carried out with multi-layered glass, marmoré glass, acid-etched decorations, patinas and textural effects. Floral motifs, foliage, landscapes and iridescent colours bear witness to the era’s characteristic fascination with the plant world.
The selection continues with a range of decorative objects and lighting fixtures, including lamps, tulip-shaped vases, wall lights and chandeliers, creating a dialogue between glass and metal. Some pieces combine the organic forms of Art Nouveau with motifs of flowers, foliage or interlaced plant forms, whilst the furniture also explores Japanese-inspired influences and lines drawn from nature.
Sculpture also features prominently, with works and models associated notably with Jean Garnier, Eugène Léon L’Hoest, Charles Virion for Alphonse Cytere and Hermann Gradl. Human figures, animals and naturalistic motifs serve as a reminder of how Art Nouveau sought to break down the boundaries between the decorative arts and sculpture.
Finally, the sale includes a section dedicated to the graphic arts and the École de Nancy, featuring several works linked to Victor Prouvé and Émile Friant, as well as prints and documents illustrating the artistic vitality of Lorraine in the early 20th century.
