A tribute to the art of hospitality.
Our forthcoming auction dedicated to tableware and silverware brings together a selection of items that celebrate the elegance and refinement of French and European table settings. Crystal, porcelain, earthenware, solid silver and silver-plated metal form a cohesive collection, where the great houses sit alongside more niche names, to the delight of enthusiasts and discerning collectors alike.
France’s most prestigious crystal-making houses are represented. Baccarat and Saint-Louis, whose centuries-old craftsmanship epitomises excellence in crystal, are featured through several sets of glasses, decanters and decorative pieces.
Several complete or partial services in porcelain and earthenware, notably by Jules Vieillard, further enrich this auction. Classic designs, gilded borders, floral motifs or more daring compositions: these sets bear witness to the evolution of taste and tableware customs, from the great tradition of the manufacturers to more contemporary productions. Plates, serving dishes, soup tureens, sauce boats and serving pieces will enable you to create a harmonious table setting or add a distinctive touch to an interior.
French silverware takes centre stage in this sale. Collectors will find pieces by Puiforcat, a firm founded in 1820 and the undisputed benchmark of Parisian silversmithing, whose creations combine purity of line with perfection of craftsmanship. The silversmith Henri Soufflot, who worked in Paris in the late 19th century and was renowned for the quality of his cutlery and serving pieces, as well as the Lapparat firm, round off this collection, alongside other silversmiths whose hallmarks bear witness to the richness of French production.
Cutlery sets, serving cutlery, goblets, serving dishes and decorative pieces: all objects that combine practical value, the quality of the metal and the beauty of the design.
Marius Hammer: Norwegian enamel in the spotlight
Among the notable pieces in this sale are several sets by the Norwegian silversmith Marius Hammer (1847–1927).
Based in Bergen, Hammer was one of the leading figures in Scandinavian silversmithing of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was particularly renowned for his mastery of enamel, and especially the plique-à-jour technique, which lends his creations remarkable transparency and delicacy.
We are particularly pleased to present a cup, saucer and spoon in enamelled silver – a set of great finesse, characteristic of the silversmith’s style and of the era’s enthusiasm for Nordic decorative art objects. These pieces, sought after by collectors worldwide, are one of the highlights of this auction.
