Description
CENTRAL UNION OF DECORATIVE ARTS
A silver-plated ewer resting on a circular foot decorated with a frieze of volutes, fleurons and palmettes; the octagonal-panelled body features applied decoration of reeds and lambrequins. The spout is in the form of a mascaron. The double-curved handle is topped by a woman’s head in the round, her hair extending into a latticework pattern.
Regency style.
Mark: ‘Union Central des Arts Décoratifs’ on the reverse.
Height: 25 cm.
Note: This ewer is comparable to a similarly inspired silver ewer with faceted sides, dating from 1722, which is held in the collections of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. A second, similar piece was produced by Henri Gauthier in the early 20th century.
