Description
Émile PINCHON (1872–1933)
“Horse with a Blanket” circa 1925
Bronze with a brown patina, signed on the pedestal.
28 x 40 cm
Bears an old exhibition label beneath the plinth: “Buenos Aires No. 7, M. Pinchon, Thoroughbred Horse”.
This bronze is also featured in the catalogue of the Pinchon retrospective held at the Grand Palais in 1934.
A rare early casting (probably a unique piece).
The artist’s grandniece, Mlle Brault, reports that Émile worked in Landowski’s studio during this period (1925–1930) and that he sculpted horses there. After 1930, he was occupied for 10 months by a government commission for a pavilion at the 1931 Colonial Exhibition. (Exhibition catalogue, *The Little-Known Work of Joseph and Emile Pinchon*, Noyon, 15 September 2007 – 6 January 2008)
Our artist died in 1933 of a heart attack. In the spring of 1934, during its annual exhibition, the Société Nationale des Arts Animaliers organised a retrospective exhibition of Emile Pinchon’s equestrian works at the Grand Palais.
Our bronze was part of this retrospective and caught the attention of a journalist from *Sport Universel*, who commented: “We must conclude this brief overview of a most beautiful exhibition with a farewell to our dear departed artists: [...] Émile Pinchon, with the horse on the cover and the pony from the Gers. His entire body of work will leave us with the memory of a great artist.”
