Otto Henry Bacher (American, 1856-1909) The siesta, 1881 Canvas. Signed and dated. Height 36 Width 51.5 cm. Moulded wood frame, stuccoed and gilded. 53 x 68 cm. The Siesta. Canvas by Otto Henry Bacher. Born in Cleveland, Otto Henry Bacher was one of the founders of the city's Academy of Fine Arts. Alongside Willis Seaver Adams, he studied at the Munich School of Fine Arts in 1878 and then travelled to various parts of Europe. He became friends with James McNeill Whistler and continued to paint and engrave, drawing on his impressionist style. Returning to the United States in 1888, he settled in New York after his marriage and became a member of the Lawrence Park artists' colony, alongside Frank Duveneck and William Merritt Chase. He received a number of awards, including a silver medal at the 1904 Saint Louis World's Fair for his engravings. He is considered to be one of the precursors of modernity in American art, as well as one of the founding members of the first school of Impressionist painters in Cleveland.
