Provenance: private collection, Sarthe. Bukovac. Fantasy (reference pose). Canvas. c. 1892. Born on the Dalmatian coast, Biagio Faggioni discovered painting in San Francisco in the United States, before studying it in Cabanel's studio in Paris. He took on the nickname Bukovac, the Croatian version of his Italian surname meaning "beech". He exhibited at the Salon des artistes français from 1878 to 1887 and then at the Universal Exhibition of 1889. In 1892, he exhibited two works again in Paris under the pseudonym Paul Andrez, including a "Fantaisie" (no. 16) that has not yet been identified. The model of our "Fantaisie" poses nude, resting, under the artist's brush in 1892 (London sale, Bonhams, 21 September 2022, no. 45). Travelling throughout Europe, Bukovac became the painter and portraitist to the courts of Serbia and Montenegro. He created the stage curtain for the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, before moving to Prague, where he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts. He is considered to be the first painter from the former Yugoslavia whose reputation extended beyond the borders of his own country.
