Description
Christof Fidelis Kimmel (Austrian, 1792 1869) etelica, 1852 also known as La Glaneuse Copper-plated zinc. Signed and dated. Height 171 cm. Kimmel. etelica, Copper-plated zinc. 1852. Christof Fidelis Kimmel was an Austrian sculptor who was born in Brussels in 1792 and died in Ljubljana on 23 August 1869. He trained and worked in Vienna. In 1834, he worked with the Austrian sculptor Josef Klieber on the Carrara marble relief for the monument to Andreas Hofer in the imperial church in Innsbruck. During the renovation of the Viennese church of Notre-Dame-du-Rivage in 1846, he created the group of the Holy Trinity for the high altar. In September 1858, he exhibited a stoneware statuette of the Immaculate Conception at the monthly exhibition of the Vienna Art Association. In February 1859, he exhibited a gypsum statue of H. Elisabeth for the same organisation, of which there are 12 copies. At the request of the Rothschild family, he created a stone statuary group for the Neptune fountain in the former Rothschild park in Schillersdorf, which can still be seen in situ in the Schlosspark in Schillersdorf in the Czech Republic. In 1867, he moved to Ljubljana to live with his son-in-law, the painter F. Fröhlich. A version of this Gleaner was erected in Topcider Park in Belgrade in the second half of the 19th century. It is the first example of decorative urban sculpture in Belgrade. Probably cast in Vienna, like the Serbian version, our zinc gleaner has been copper-plated using the electrolytic copper-plating process invented in the middle of the century. This idealised peasant woman with modestly veiled hair holds a sheaf of wheat in her arms, evoking abundance and allegorical figures associated with the harvest such as Ceres or Demeter. Her left foot is resting on a sheaf of wheat in a classicising contrapposto, an attitude typical of academic sculpture. Her face has the features of a Greek Venus: a straight nose, almond-shaped eyes, a slightly defined corner of the mouth and a small mouth. The oval chin rises slightly upwards and the cheeks are softly modelled. Together with her antique-style dress and bare shoulder, these elements give our figure a mythological timelessness.
