'Madonna and Child. Sedes Sapientiae'
Carved wooden sculpture.
89,5 x 40 x 27 cm.
The representation of the enthroned Virgin and Child, a direct heir to the Byzantine tradition of the Theotokos and reinterpreted in the West under the designation Sedes Sapientiae, experienced notable diffusion between the 13th and 14th centuries, eventually becoming one of the most favored iconographies of medieval sculpture. This Latin term, translatable as “Throne of Wisdom,” refers to Mary’s role as the support of the Incarnate Word, an idea already present in the writings of Peter Damian and Guibert of Nogent in the 11th and 12th centuries, where an analogy is drawn between the Mother of God and the throne of King Solomon.
