Description
Indochina School of Fine Arts, Hanoi
A polychrome lacquered wooden panel with gold highlights, created using the sơn mài technique, depicting a river landscape bustling with sampans.
Against a deep red background, canopied boats stand out, steered by fishermen wearing the traditional Vietnamese conical hat (nón lá). A large tree with golden foliage completes the composition, creating a play of contrasts between the red tones and the golden accents.
The panel is signed in the bottom right-hand corner with a cursive signature, which bears a resemblance to that of Lê Thy (1919–1961), whose real name was Trần Minh Thị, a leading figure in Southern Vietnamese lacquer art.
After attending preparatory courses in Hanoi between 1943 and 1945, notably under the guidance of Nguyễn Nam Sơn, Lê Thy opened a renowned studio in Saigon in 1947. River landscapes dotted with sampans, as well as compositions evoking Halong Bay, feature among her favourite themes, often rendered in a palette combining red and gold.
90 × 61.5 cm.
Missing section in the top right-hand corner; signs of wear.
The attribution to Lê Thy remains to be confirmed.
