FIJI ISLANDS, Melanesia. ‘Ike’ tapa beater made of wood with a quadrangular cross-section and a cylindrical handle. This beater, decorated with fine vertical striations, was used to flatten, stretch and smooth the fibres of the bast during the preparation of bark cloth. Early 20th century. L. 43.5 cm.
