Description
FANG, Gabon.
Wood, pigments.
A dance mask depicting a broad human face; the slightly raised brow ridges dominate two narrow slits, giving the gaze an expression of restraint and deep introspection.
The nose, situated in the centre of the face, leads down to a small mouth, a prominent chin and a rim perforated with holes for securing plant fibres.
Early 20th century or earlier.
34x21 cm
(slits).
Provenance: Part of a collection of objects gathered in situ at the very beginning of the 20th century by the colonial engineer-adviser, Laurent Schlüssel (according to family tradition).
Note: The label gives the exhibitor’s name as L. Schussel. The Ministry of the Colonies’ archives on colonial staff confirm the presence of Laurent Ernest Schlüssel as a colonial engineer. He was head of department in 1885.
