Émile Noirot (1853–1924) Landscape of Commières, 1892. Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, countersigned, dated and titled on the reverse. 32 x 46 cm. Condition report: Framed. Émile Noirot was a French landscape painter originally from Roanne. A pupil of Charles-François Daubigny and closely associated with the legacy of the Barbizon School, he developed a style of plein air painting devoted to the landscapes of the Loire, Auvergne and Italy. Straddling realism and Impressionism, his work is characterised by a sensitive attention to the effects of light and atmosphere. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français and won several awards at the World’s Fairs of 1889 and 1893, where *Le Saut du Perron* represented France in Chicago. This highly modern composition foreshadows, through its colours and texture, the landscapes of Eugène Leroy.
