Joseph Csaky (1888–1971) Purity or Modesty, circa 1965/1975 Lost-wax bronze cast (without core or foundry mark) with a nuanced golden-brown patina Based on the original plaster cast of 1958 H. 81 cm W. 16.5 cm D. 15.5 cm Bibliography: > A similar model is reproduced in the book ‘Joseph Csaky’ by Félix Marcilhac, published by Éditions de l’Amateur in 2007, under no. FM.326/b, page 380. This work is accompanied by a certificate from Mr Jean-Christian Daveau, a member of the Compagnie des Experts en Art et Antiquités, dated 29 June 2026. In 1956, the Hungarian sculptor Joseph Csaky stayed in Amiens and became friends with Dr Vanbremeersch. He stayed with this collector from 1957 to 1960. This piece forms part of a limited edition commissioned by Andrée Vanbremeersch, the doctor’s wife, who purchased the original plaster cast from the artist around 1960, for her own family. The first original cast, from the commissioning couple’s collection, was produced as a single original bronze cast, signed and dated 1958, by the Susse Foundry. Csaky undertook the chiselling and patination himself to keep the cost of the edition down. Having moved away from Cubism, the sculptor devoted himself to refined, transparent forms, as evidenced by his drawings and bas-reliefs from the 1950s.
