The Virgin and Child in a landscape
Grey wash over red chalk lines, on vellum.
16.7 x 21.7 cm
Signs of wear
Unidentified collector’s mark (L.4582) in the lower right-hand corner; indecipherable inscriptions on the reverse
Our drawing is inspired by an etching by Camilo Procaccini (Bologna 1555–Milan 1629) depicting the Rest of the Holy Family, but our artist retains only the main group—that of the Virgin nursing the Child—whilst inverting it. The woodland landscape of the print, teeming with vegetation, is here replaced by a column base on the left and a tuft of dandelions on the right. Far in the background is a landscape resembling the Porta San Paolo in Rome, featuring the Pyramid of Cestius and the Aurelian Wall. Despite a few inaccuracies in proportion, the work is executed with great finesse.
