Description
French piece, late 19th–early 20th century. White cotton tablecloth, embroidered with numerous fleurs-de-lis and, in the centre, the mirror-image initials ‘G’ and ‘I’, which, combined with the fleur-de-lis motif, are reminiscent of the initials of Gaston and Isabelle d’Orléans-Bragance, Count and Countess of Eu. Isabelle of Braganza (1846–1921) was the eldest daughter of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil; in 1864 she married a grandson of King Louis-Philippe I, Prince Gaston d’Orléans, Count of Eu, and through this marriage founded the branch known as the ‘Princes of Orléans-Bragance’. The couple had four children. In her father’s absence, Princess Isabelle of Brazil served as regent of Brazil on three occasions: in 1872, 1877 and 1888. It was during this last regency that the daughter of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil signed the act abolishing slavery, earning her the title for posterity: Isabel a Redentora (Isabelle the Redeemer).
