Description
GRATCHEV company. St Petersburg, late 19th century. A rectangular cigarette case with rounded corners, featuring a match compartment and a compartment for tinder, with a vermeil interior. The exterior surface is decorated with a fan-shaped gadrooned pattern. The opening button and the monogram on the lid (MA) are in rose gold. The monogram on the back (WK) is in silver, surmounted by a princely crown. The date 1894–1895 is engraved on the inside of the lid. The monogram ‘M A’ beneath a marquis’s crown belongs to Miguel Marie Léon Pierre d’Arcangues, 5th Marquis of Iranda (1857–1915), whilst the monogram ‘KW’ beneath a grand duke’s crown belongs to Kirill Vladimirovich (1876–1938), who would become the pretender to the Russian throne in exile. It was a gift from the Grand Duke to the Marquis, no doubt in gratitude for his hospitality. Hallmarks: 84, Saint Petersburg [1896–1899] and silversmith “ГРАЧЕВЪ” (Gratchev) surmounted by the eagle of the Court purveyor. 10 x 6.5 x 1.5 cm Gross weight: 198.75 g
