Description
MALE BRONZE STATUETTE
Etruscan art, first quarter of the 5th century BC.
A votive statuette depicting a young man standing, with his weight resting on his right leg and his left leg stepped forward. He is clad in a tebenna draped over his left shoulder. His left arm is stretched forward, whilst his right arm, raised, holds a circular object in his hand, probably a phiale. His head is encircled by a headband holding back long hair rendered in wavy locks, the front strands of which are lifted and swept forward to form a ridge above the forehead. The face, with full cheeks, displays features characteristic of the period: arched eyebrows, large almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose and full lips forming a slight archaic smile.
Fracture at the pelvis and restorations to the limbs.
Height: 24 cm (excluding tenons)
Provenance: Collection of Charles Gillet (1879–1972), then passed down through the family
