Description
A wall sconce known as a ‘ribbon sconce’, in chiselled and gilded bronze, surmounted by a female head and an antique-style lamp bowl decorated with fluting and rosettes, through the handles of which runs a long ribbon, the lower section featuring a garland of laurel leaves, the lamp base in seed-grain finish and a frieze of fleurons. The circular dial is enamelled in white with black Arabic and Roman numerals, signed ‘Verdier fils’. Louis XVI period. The pendulum is missing; signs of wear. Height: 72 cm Note: The original drawing of a comparable cartel clock appears in Osmond’s *Le Livre des Desseins* under number 36, INHA library, known as the ‘ribbon cartel’ or ‘large model’. Created by Robert Osmond around 1770, this model proved highly popular amongst Parisian collectors. Two examples featured in the royal collections: the first was delivered in 1767 for Madame Victoire’s apartments at Versailles, and the second, a few years later, for King Louis XVI whilst he was still Dauphin. Robert Osmond (1711–1789) was admitted as a master bronze-smith in Paris in 1746. A leading exponent of Neoclassicism, he also produced numerous rocaille clock cases. Bibliography: - H.
