Description
A very rare sabre belonging to a senior officer of the King’s Gendarmerie, with a shell-shaped guard and three chiselled and gilded brass branches bearing the arms of France; below these, an openwork palmette and, on either side, two small chiselled laurel branches, a leaf-decorated crossguard, a long, fully chiselled pommel with foliage and laurel leaves, a counterguard adorned with a palmette, a leather-covered tang, filigree; straight blade with double fuller, gilded and blued to one-third of its length, shortened, point in the centre, length 85 cm; nickel-plated iron scabbard with a single ferrule, of a later date; total length 104 cm. Early Restoration period. Very good condition. This sabre is the only one known to be in private hands or in a museum (?). It was probably re-used by a descendant of this officer, in the late 19th or early 20th century.
