Description
A pair of pistols awarded by the Executive Directory to Citizen Trawitz. Flintlock frames converted to percussion, with flat frames signed ‘Manufre A VERSAILLES’. Barrelles with fine rifling marked ‘Boutet Directeur Artiste’, oval-shaped acceptance hallmarks on the breeches featuring laurel leaves and bearing the initials ‘NB’ (Nicolas Noël Boutet) and ‘CB’ (Carbonel, inspector from Year III to Year VII, chief artillery brigade officer) and “DC” (barely legible near the firing pins, for Delacroix from 29 Vendémiaire, Year IV). Checkered walnut stocks, all iron fittings. Oval caps marked ‘The Executive Directory to Citizen Trawitz’. All screws are guilloché-engraved. A few cracks in the wood; one replacement hammer screw; a rear sight and a front sight are missing, as is one ramrod pommel; slight wear at the corners of the barrels near the muzzles. Mechanism in good working order. France, Directoire period. Overall length: 35.5 cm. Category D FRÉDERIC-LOUIS TRAWITZ (1771–1817) Captain in the 89th demi-brigade, subsequently aide-de-camp to General Henri Schauenburg, commander of the French army in Switzerland; Schauenburg entrusted him with presenting to the Directory the flags captured from the Swiss cantons, and he was promoted to battalion commander on 13 Prairial, Year VI. We believe that, like General Suchet, Trawitz received this pair of pistols on the occasion of the handover of the flags. Expert: Mr Alban Degrave - Expert: Alban DEGRAVE, Artlys Patrimoine
