In June 1703, the Duchess of Maine founded the satirical Order of the ‘Honey Fly’ to parody the great chivalric orders. Being small in stature and strong-willed, she was compared to a bee, her favourite symbol. She drew inspiration for this honour from a quote by the poet Le Tasse (“She is small, but inflicts serious wounds”), which she associated with her own personality. This original, mixed-gender order comprised around forty privileged members, both men and women.
