Description
Ronnie Tjampitjinpa (Pintupi) (1943-2023) Fire Dreaming / Le Rêve du feu 2008 Acrylic on Belgian linen 114 x 175 cm Provenance: > Galerie Art Mob, Hobart (Tasmania) > Île-de-France private collection > With a certificate from Art Mob Ronnie was a founding member of the Western Desert painting movement and a high-ranking lawman. He was known for his strong, dynamic personality and bold, iconic painting style, reflecting his deep knowledge of ceremonies and his leadership qualities. As a political spokesman for his people, he was instrumental in their return to their ancestral lands, following their disapproval of living together with other tribes in the main communities established by the government. His main residence became Kintore, where he was one of the main spokesmen for the Pintupi. This painting depicts the Pintupi Dream of Fire Ceremony. This event is an opportunity to settle old scores and light huge bonfires at nightfall. Simulated battles are fought and grievances expressed. Participants are sometimes slightly burnt, but it is a community event that eases tensions. The lines represent firebreaks and the squares are sacred ceremonial places. Fire is also used as a hunting tool. Game is driven into canyons, half-cooked animals are gathered up and the charred earth encourages new green grass to grow, promoting the rapid reproduction of kangaroos. MJ
