Description
Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi (Anmatyerre/ Luritja) (born 1967) Grandmother's country / Le pays de ma grand-mère 2009 Acrylic on canvas signed on the back and reference number EAGPNGC103 50 x 61 cm Provenance: > Commissioned by Peter Los > Private collection Île-de-France A certificate will be given with the work Condition report : Framed Gabriella paints the country and stories of her father's mother, Long rose Nungala. She takes a topographical view of the land and at the same time shows its reflection in the sky. The land is alive with dreamy trails that are followed at certain times of the year to harvest edible plants. It shows yams, berries, fruit and other vegetables harvested by the women of the tribe, usually by digging in the bush. This is a painting that remembers the past and educates its children for the future by giving clues about the location of certain foods. Most of the verbal clues are passed on during ceremonies in which young kungas (girls) are shown where bush food grows in abundance. This painting is rare because Gabriella worked her theme on a blue background. Most of her work is on a black background, some on a yellow or red background, but very rarely on a blue background. This painting was specially commissioned by Peter Los to work on this type of background colour.
