Description
Kongo fetish, Democratic Republic of the Congo, wood, nails, H.50cm x W.22cm. The imposing stature, aggressive stance and all-seeing gaze of a n’kondi, as well as its associations with deadly afflictions and natural forces such as storms, fire and birds of prey, served to deter antisocial behaviour. If its ability to prevent transgressions failed, a n’kondi was taken to the scene of the crime and set upon the culprit. These regulatory instruments were believed to control potentially fatal physical ailments, violence and even death. Consequently, a minkondi could punish offenders with the full force of these very afflictions.
