Description
Kota reliquary figure, Gabon, wood, copper, H.46cm x W.22cm. These sculptures, which were placed atop the wicker baskets containing the relics, were intended to watch over the ancestors’ bones. During major ceremonies (bwett, mbulu-ngulu or mboy) in which only initiates took part, the guardians and the reliquaries were brought out into the open so that the ancestors could, even after their death, play a part in the important decisions that clan members were called upon to make.
