Description
17th-century Flemish school The Enchanted Forest (Jerusalem Delivered, Canto XIII) Oil on panel 49 x 65 cm. ‘The Enchanted Forest’ illustrates an episode from Canto XIII of Tasso’s *Jerusalem Delivered*, in which the Christian knights find themselves confronted by a forest bewitched by Armide’s magic. The episode thus transforms the epic conflict into a symbolic ordeal in which nature becomes a realm of illusion, fear and temptation. The forest, at once alluring and menacing, embodies the supernatural forces that delay the fulfilment of the heroic mission.
