Description
19th-century French school, after Jean II Restout (1692–1768) The Presentation of the Child in the Temple Oil on canvas 120 x 80 cm. A copy of the 1735 painting, commissioned for the chapel of the Saint-Sulpice Seminary, now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux (407 x 275 cm, inv. Bx E 38). Following the suppression of the Society of Saint Sulpice in 1792, the painting was seized and sent to the Bordeaux Museum in 1805. The fire at the Town Hall in 1870 severely damaged the left-hand side of the work; although restoration work was carried out, it did not fully restore the painting’s clarity, which means our copy predates this tragic event.
