Description
Luxurious hunting rifle, ‘Franco-Persian’.
Flat-bottomed flintlock with a swan-neck hammer.
It is signed ‘Biche à Vezoul’ in cursive script and engraved with a depiction of a four-legged animal.
Carved walnut stock decorated with a wild boar’s head.
Trigger guard featuring a crowned imperial eagle.
Oriental-style barrel, square-sectioned then round, made of Damascus steel.
It bears an inscription that appears to be in Farsi, suggesting it was likely manufactured in Persia.
Mechanics in good condition.
Overall length: 141 cm.
The ‘Who’s Who’ of French arms lists a Bich father and son as active in Vesoul from 1823 to 1835.
This piece probably stems from an earlier work by the same arquebusier.
Triggers featuring the imperial eagle are generally found on weapons presented as gifts or belonging to those close to Emperor Napoleon I.
This particular piece is notable for its oriental-style barrel, which suggests either the campaign
of 1798 – a war trophy elegantly refitted in France – or the Franco-Persian relations of 1807–1809.
