Gold ballroom notebook (750 thousandths), Martin varnish and red Japanese lacquer; the front cover features a design of birds and musical instruments perched on a branch adorned with carnations, painted in polychrome Martin varnish against a red lacquer background; the back cover features a polychrome design of a pair of birds, a butterfly, a dog and a quiver set against a background of rose branches. The hinged interior contains, on the first inside cover, a rectangular miniature painted on vellum depicting a young woman dressed in blue, seated and drinking from a cup of hot chocolate, in the style of Jean-Daniel Welper (1730–1789) and mounted under glass; lined with blue silk satin and comprising 8 blank leaves. Previous restorations, minor losses to the Martin varnish. Paris, 1738–1744. Fox’s head hallmark. H. 9.4 x W. 6.4 x D. 1.3 cm. Gross weight: 95.7 g.
